Maintenance

There seems to be a misconception that the lakes maintain themselves or Tommy Walsh comes in the dead of night and fixes all the broken pallets.
Before the start of the season a small number of members - mainly the same ones as last year - gave up a lot of their free Sundays to ensure that all the swims were fishable for the current season. It was hard work but the lakes looked nice.
Within 2 weeks, 2 pallets were broken - but nobody owned up to doing so, and a third broke when a member got on it (obviously as a result of previous careless use).
Here is an offer of some advice regarding maintenance:
1. It is the responsibility of ALL members to ensure that pallets are safe to fish from.
2. All damage should be reported to Malcolm, but NOT to rant at him to tell him to get it fixed!
3. If you break a pallet, then mend it. It usually only takes a few slats of wood (usually taken from a spare pallet) and some nails - surely not beyond the capability of any member.
4. Even if you didn’t break it, then at least offer help in mending it, especially if you didn’t do any maintenance at the work parties.
5. Less than a quarter of members helped with the work parties, but all members expect to be able to fish safely from any pallet. It is the responsibility of everyone to ensure safe and enjoyable fishing.
6. Finally - take your rubbish home! Don’t dump it in the bushes or leave it in the swims. Metal and plastic are a danger to anglers and wildlife alike.
